50 heartfelt birthday wishes for your best friend

Most birthday messages to a best friend fail the same way: they could be sent to anybody. "Happy birthday! Hope you have a great day!" is polite, and it is indistinguishable from the fourteen other messages arriving that morning.

The wishes below are sorted by what you actually want to say. Take one, change a name, add the detail only you would know — that last part is what makes it land.

If you want to be funny

What actually makes a birthday message land

Three things, and none of them are the wording.

Specificity. "Happy birthday!" costs nothing. "Happy birthday to the person who drove four hours to sit in a hospital car park with me" costs a memory, and that is what makes it worth keeping.

Timing. A message at 9am reads as a reminder you set. A message at 9pm, after the noise, often lands harder — that's when people notice who's still thinking about them.

Your actual voice. Read your message out loud before sending it. If you wouldn't say it in that order, with those words, to their face, rewrite it. Text flattens tone; what sounds warm in your head can read as flat on a screen.

That last one is the hardest to fix in writing, which is why so many people give up and send the default.
